Sand Sifter: Step-by-Step Guide to Remove Microplastics

This DIY (do-it-yourself) tool will help you spot and remove small plastic particles, keeping our beaches cleaner and safer for wildlife.

Materials Needed:

- 1 piece of screen

- 4 half-inch PVC elbow connectors

- Around 20 zip ties

- 1 rubber mallet

- Scissors

- 4 half-inch PVC pipes, each 1 foot long

- 2 pool noodles

Instructions:

1. Build the Frame:

- Attach one elbow connector to a PVC pipe, pushing it in place.

- Use the rubber mallet to tap the elbow so it’s secure.

- Connect the next PVC pipe to form a corner, and repeat until all elbows and pipes form a square frame.

2. Attach the Screen:

- Lay the frame flat and place the screen over it.

- Attach the screen with zip ties:

- Place one zip tie in the middle of each side.

- Add zip ties to each corner.

- Add one more zip tie between each middle and corner zip tie, totaling 5 on each side.

3. Center and Tighten:

- Adjust the screen so it’s centered within the frame.

- Tighten all zip ties securely, then trim off the excess ends with scissors.

4. Add Pool Noodle Handles:

- Slice each pool noodle lengthwise (not all the way through).

- Snap a noodle onto each side of the frame to create soft, safe handles.

Now your sand sifter is complete! Take it to the beach, scoop up sand, and shake gently to sift out microplastics or beach treasures like fossilized shark teeth or shells.
